Some taxpayers that have previously needed to complete a self assessment tax return will now longer have to. HMRC will be able to calculate the tax of some employees and pensioners by use of data they already hold from third parties. HMRC have named this system “simple assessment”.
Full details published by HMRC.
If you are within this system HMRC will send you either a P800 or PA302 showing any tax due. This can then be checked and if correct simply paid without the need to contact HMRC at any stage in the process.
If there are any errors in anything sent by HMRC it is important to notify them promptly, usually within 60 days but in some cases within 30 days of the notice containing an error or any subsequent correspondence. This is a far shorter time period than the usual nearly 10 months available to complete a self assessment tax return.
