Newsletter 7 November 2025 – Companies House reforms

Green Accountancy Newsletter – 7 November 2025

As a purpose-driven accountancy firm, we believe that transparency, accountability, and ethical governance are essential to building a better economy. This month, we’re focusing on major changes to UK company law that align with these values—and what they mean for your organisation.

Companies House reforms – what you need to know

From 18 November 2025, the UK government is introducing the first wave of changes under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act. These reforms are designed to improve the integrity of the company register and reduce the misuse of UK corporate structures.

Key changes:

Identity verification required
All company directors, Persons with Significant Control (PSCs), and those forming companies will need to verify their identity. This can be done directly via Companies House using the new GOV.UK One Login system.  You’ll just need a form of photo ID issued by government such as a passport or driving license.

This is a major step toward ensuring that UK companies are run by real, accountable individuals.

No more internal registers for officers
You’ll no longer need to maintain internal registers of:

  • Directors
  • Directors’ residential addresses
  • Secretaries
  • PSCs

Instead, this information must be kept up to date at Companies House.

Register of members still required
You must continue to maintain a register of shareholders or members in the case of company limited by guarantee. This must be:

  • Held at your registered office or SAIL address
  • Available for public inspection

Other simplifications

  • The option to keep officer information solely on the central register is being removed
  • You no longer need to provide a director’s business occupation

What this means for purpose-driven entities

If your organisation is a Community Interest Company (CIC), co-operative, B Corp, Limited Company Charity or other mission-led business, these changes are especially relevant. They support a more transparent and trustworthy business environment—something many of you already champion.

By verifying identities and improving data accuracy, the reforms help level the playing field for ethical businesses and reduce the risk of fraud and misuse of company structures.
