Charities with an annual income over £25,000 must arrange for an independent examination. Independent examinations are less rigorous than an audit and involve reviewing the accounts and checking for specific matters only. If a charity’s gross income exceeds £250,000, the independent examiner must be a member of a listed body, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Charities with an income over £1 million are generally required to have their accounts audited.
